NIGHT MAIL

Composed by: W. H Auden

This is the night mail crossing the Border,           a
Bringing the cheque and the postal order,           a

Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,                  b
The shop at the corner, the girl next door.            b

Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:                     c
The gradient's against her, but she's on time.         c

Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder             d
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,          d

Snorting noisily as she passes                              e
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.                         e

Birds turn their heads as she approaches,           d
Stare from bushes at her blank-faced coaches.              d

Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course;                     f
They slumber on with paws across.                      f

In the farm she passes no one wakes,                  g
But a jug in a bedroom gently shakes.                  g
