Q.NO.1:  What light do the following expressions throw on Leacock state? “To look timidly” and “shambled in”.

Answer: “To look timidly” means to look in a cowardly manner and “Shambled in” means to walk with uneasy steps. Both phrases show that the writer was nervous and upset when he entered the bank.

Q.NO.2:  Why did the manager come to think that Leacock had an awful secret to reveal?

Answer: The manager came to suspect that he had an awful secret to reveal because of his mysterious manners. The writer’s tone also suggested that he was a detective. He was uttering the word “alone” again and again.         

Q.NO.3:  What was the attitude of the manager towards Leacock on learning that he only wished to deposit 56 dollars in the bank?

Answer: When the manager learned that Leacock wished to deposit only 56 dollars in the bank, he became unkind and rude. He asked him rudely to leave the private room.

Q.NO.4:  What other blunders did Leacock commit after leaving the manager’s office?

Answer: Leacock committed the following blunders:

1.      He entered the safe.

2.      He deposited all 56 dollars.

3.      He wrote 56 dollars on the cheque instead of six.

 

Q.NO.5:  After this misadventure in the bank where did Leacock keep his money.                                                                                                                               Answer: After his misadventure in the bank, the writer keeps his money (hard cash) in the pockets of his trousers and coins in the socks.

Q.NO.6:  Give as many examples as you can to show that Leacock was feeling completely lost in the bank all the time he was?

Answer: When Leacock entered the bank, he was quite nervous and upset. The wickets, clerks, and money rattled him. The following examples show that he was completely puzzled and lost in the bank:

1.      He wanted to meet the manager “alone”.

2.      He entered the safe instead of going out of the private room.

3.      He deposited all 56 dollars.

4.      He wrote 56 dollars on the cheque instead of six.

Q.NO.1:  Why did the writer go to the bank?

Answer: The writer’s salary was increased 56 dollars a month. So, he thought that bank was the only place to deposit and save it.

Q.NO.2:  What was the mental condition of the writer when he entered the bank?                                                                                                                          

Answer: The writer was quite nervous and upset when he entered the bank. The wickets, clerks and money rattled him. The bank swam before him. 

Q.NO.3: Why did the manager think that he was a millionaire (Richman)?                                                                         

Answer: The writer wanted to meet the manager alone. Firstly, the manager suspected that he was a detective but when the writer told him that he wanted to deposit  “all his money” in the bank, the manager thought that he was a rich man. He thought that he was a son of Baron Rothschild or a young Gould.

Q.NO.4: Write a note on the character of the manager?

Answer: The manager was a grave and calm man. He was a pure professional man. Through the writer’s mysterious manners, he suspected that the writer was a detective but when he came to know that he had to deposit only 56 dollars, he became unkind and cold.

What did the writer hear when he left the bank?

Answer: When the writer left the bank, he heard a huge echo of laughter from the bank. All the people were laughing at him. Since then the writer never visited any bank.
